Today, for blog post 69, I thought I’d talk about something not very long and quite small.
Yep, you guessed it, I’m talking 45’s. If you guessed something else, I admire your spirit, but shame on you!
These tiny little disks of pure goodness make up for some of my favourite records.
Even more fun than playing then is finding them.
Fishing through a bin of 45’s can be long and tiring work. But, its like finding hidden treasure when you come across something special. For that reason, I can never walk past a bin of 45’s without having a look…….. what can I say, I’m a curious character!
So here is this 4th edition of Friday Night tunes, I’m going to briefly talk about each on of my 45’s, mainly because I don’t actually have that many!
Metallica – “Until It Sleeps” Limited Edition 10-inch Single

This is the first 45 I purchased brand new (well, unopened anyway) for my record collection, and one I paid the most for, but it’s definitely worth it.
It was the first single released from the album “load” and is up there as one of my favourites all time songs.
To top it off, the vinyl disk is red, just in case it needed any more awesomeness!
On the Flip side:
We have a live version of “2 X 4” and a Herman Melville (Moby) mix of Until it Sleeps.
Santana – “Stormy”

Who doesn’t like Santana with their cruisey tunes?
I can’t quite explain why I like Santana; I just do. They’re easy to listen to and have good variation.
Santana is one of those bands that you can just play in the background without any real hassles.
This single isn’t mind-blowing, but that’s ok, it doesn’t need to be.
On the Flip Side:
“Move on”. No seriously, the song Move on is on the flip side!
The Fine Young Cannibals – “Good Thing”

This song takes me back to a time when……. I can’t really remember.
Regardless of the fact that my memory sucks, this song does take me back to a better time.
I can remember listening to this song on the radio some time after it was released, and I still enjoy it today.
On the Flip Side:
The somewhat lesser known Fine Young Cannibals song – “Social Security”, that somehow sounds like something from the 60’s!
Bad Wolves – “Zombie”

This is latest 45 I purchased brand new, and for good reason. Bad Wolves version of Zombie is brilliant, and probably just as relevant now as it was when the Cranberries were belting it out.
I love my Gold Disk version, its equally as special as the song.
On the Flip Side:
“Zombie” (Acoustic), a little slower and unplugged, a very worthy alternative.
Def Leppard – “Rock of Ages”

The first album I ever brought with my own money was the Def Leppard album – “Hysteria”. So, it stand to reason that I have a 45 for Def Leppard.
I came across this little gem while fishing through one of many bins of 45’s and I’m rather surprised I came across it.
This song makes me feel like I’m 13 again listening to it on my Walkman! Oh, the memories!
On the Flip Side:
“Action! Not Words”, seems almost stoic in a way.
Stevie Wonder – “I Just Called to Say I Love You”

I admire Stevie Wonder, I really do. And while I only like a handful of his songs, that doesn’t mean that you can’t admire the man himself.
So, when I found this 45, I had to get it.
And if you listen to the words in this song, there’s some pretty sound advice in it.
On the Flip Side:
“I Just Called to Say I love You” (Instrumental), textbook 45!
As we draw to a close for another Friday Night Tunes Session, never forget that something doesn’t need to be big for it to be special. But, then again, sometimes it does!
Sorry, I couldn’t help myself, it is post 69 after all!
Have a great weekend gang, I hope you’ve enjoyed Friday Night Tunes IV.
‘til next time….. Cheers!
