24. The rainbow connection

Rainbows are wonderous things, a meteorological phenomenon, something from the land of unicorns and a place where Irish Leprechauns hide their stash.

Strictly speaking rainbows are just light reflecting off water droplets and aren’t a real thing, but they did get me thinking.

When did we stop chasing rainbows?

Seriously, when did we go from pursuing something that is unrealistic and probably won’t happen to not even trying in the first place?

Now I know, we all need to grow up sometime and we can’t all live the life of a freelance influencer, but it seems that we have gotten so serious with ourselves that we won’t even provide ourselves with the opportunity to try, not to mention fail.

Everywhere you look, there’s people telling us to grow up, conform to the social norm, get a steady job, don’t rock the boat, etc. And it’s all bullshit.

The world needs dreamers, it needs people defying the norm and it needs people to take risks.

You’ve only got to scroll through social media for 5 minutes to see its riddled with people who think they are being outrageous, but in reality, they are conforming. For example, take a look at all the fake people wearing brown and white and trying to take the earthy, natural pictures. All utter garbage, all fake and all clearly just trying to get attention without getting criticism. What you don’t see is all their stuff getting covered with ants and someone nicking their campervan because they felt it running so the fairy lights wouldn’t drain the battery.

I know this sounds like a rant, which is good because that is exactly what it is!

I accept that many people just don’t want to take that leap, which is fine, I get that. That was me for a long time. I mean, I’d still like to get a mortgage and break free from the renting vicelike grip, but sadly, that’s just not on the cards at the moment.

I also acknowledge the dichotomy that exists here, you don’t want everyone bucking the system otherwise it will all fail. I just feel that the ratio is a bit skewed, and it needs to be fixed.

a double rainbow struggling to get it up, we’ve all been there!

So, what needs to be done. I dunno, given that it’s a social construct thing, then maybe we need to send Neo in to reset the matrix, other than that, I got nothing.

This is just one of these odd observations I make, that take a while to unpack. I’m sure as I start to figure it all out, I’ll add more blogs on the topic.

For now, I think all we can do is make sure we take some time to dream a little.

We need to be willing to take risks from time to time. We need to get on our kids skateboard and fall of it, hard! Ok, maybe not actually get on a skateboard, that’s going a bit too far, I’m sure Satan invented those to punish foolish people!

We all seem to be getting a little too comfortable with not doing much, and that’s going to bit us on the arse at some point very soon.

Comfort is not progress and you’ll only be able to use the whole COVID-19 excuse for so long, trust me on this. Your growth needs to transcend a global pandemic, as does your hopes and dreams.

Every step you don’t take now will be steps you need to take with all the rest of the pale skinned humans who have spent their recent history locked in their house binge watching My Little Pony.

Do you really want to be competing with them or do you want to be further ahead and free from the pack? Think about that for a while.

Now if you don’t mind me, I need to go and see a frog who reckons he’s got a lead on a rainbow connection!

‘til next time….. cheers!
